Currency and Money
Currency: The official currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), symbolized as Rp. Banknotes come in denominations like Rp 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, and 100,000.
Payment Methods:
Cash: Still widely preferred, especially in smaller markets, local shops, and rural areas. Always carry smaller denominations (Rp 10,000, Rp 20,000, Rp 50,000) for convenience.
Cards: Credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted in larger hotels, supermarkets, restaurants, and tourist-focused businesses in more developed areas like Ubud, Seminyak, and Kuta.
ATMs: Widely available. Use ATMs inside banks for better security. Be aware of potential fees from your bank.
Money Changers: Be cautious. Only use authorized money changers, typically found in official-looking offices, often with "P.T. Kuta Central" or similar official names. Avoid those with unusually high exchange rates advertised on the street, as these are often scams.
Tipping: Tipping isn't strictly mandatory but is appreciated for good service. Many restaurants include a service charge, but for guides, drivers, and spa therapists, a small tip is a nice gesture.
Transportation
Within Bali:
Private Driver: This is often the most convenient and comfortable way to explore, especially for longer distances or day trips. You can hire a car with a driver for a full day (typically 8-10 hours) for a reasonable price.
Ride-hailing Apps (Grab & Gojek): These are very popular and convenient for shorter trips, like getting around towns. You can order cars or even scooter taxis (ojeks) through the apps. They offer fixed prices and are generally cheaper and more reliable than street taxis (except for Bluebird taxis).
Bluebird Taxis: Reputable meter taxis. If hailing one, ensure it's a genuine Bluebird (blue car with the bird logo and meter). Using their app is safer.
Scooter Rental: While popular, it's not recommended for inexperienced riders due to chaotic traffic and poor road conditions. Accidents are common, and your travel insurance might not cover you if you don't have a valid international motorbike license.
Between Islands (e.g., to Nusa Lembongan/Penida): Fast boats are the primary mode of transport.
Local Customs and Etiquette
Balinese culture is deeply spiritual and respectful. Showing respect for local customs will greatly enhance your experience.
Temple Etiquette:
Dress Modestly: When visiting temples, both men and women must cover their shoulders and knees. A sarong and sash are usually required and can often be rented or provided at the entrance.
Respect Offerings (Canang Sari): You'll see small palm-leaf offerings on the ground. Step around them, not on or over them, as they are sacred.
Photography: Be discreet and ask permission before taking photos of people, especially during ceremonies. Avoid using flash.
General Conduct:
Use Your Right Hand: When giving or receiving something (money, food, gifts), always use your right hand. The left hand is considered unclean.
Head and Feet: The head is considered the most sacred part of the body, and the feet the least. Avoid touching anyone's head. Don't point your feet at people or sacred objects.
Public Displays of Affection: Keep public displays of affection to a minimum.
Be Polite: A smile and basic Indonesian phrases like "Terima kasih" (thank you) go a long way.
Bargaining: In markets, bargaining is expected, but do so politely and with a smile. Don't go too low, and be prepared to walk away if the price isn't right.
Health and Safety
Drink Bottled Water: Do NOT drink tap water. Use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth.
Mosquitoes: Use effective insect repellent, particularly at dawn and dusk.
Sun Protection: The sun is strong near the equator. Use high SPF sunscreen, wear a hat, and seek shade during peak hours.
Food Safety: Stick to reputable restaurants. Be cautious with street food, though many warungs (local eateries) are excellent if they are popular and busy (high turnover of food).
Traffic: Traffic can be chaotic. Be very careful when crossing roads and consider using ride-hailing apps or private drivers instead of self-driving a scooter if you're not experienced.
Scams: Be aware of common scams:
Money Changer Scams: As mentioned, use authorized money changers.
Fake Taxis: Use Bluebird or ride-hailing apps.
Scooter Rental Scams: Take photos of any existing damage before renting a scooter to avoid being blamed later.
Personal Belongings: Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded tourist areas. Pickpocketing and bag snatching can occur.
Travel Insurance: Make sure your personal travel and health insurance is comprehensive and covers activities like diving.
